Explosive Brisbane five-piece The Belligerents are set to take their dance frenzied, disco-pop live show on the road for a national tour in March and April to celebrate the release of their much anticipated debut EP Less Arty More Party.

In 2010, the band infused the hearts and dancing shoes of audiences; supporting acts such as Metronomy (UK), Neon Indian (USA), Breakbot (France), Yacht Club DJs, The Paper Scissors and DZ.

The debut single from the EP, These Hands, was officially released by singles label Major Label in late 2010 and since then has received airplay on Triple J and was featured on scenewave’s weekly playlist.

If the Belligerents’ last show at Woodland with Metronomy is anything to go by, next Saturday promises to be a loose night!

For me Comic Sans burst into my conscience seemingly as quickly as they dissipated into the labyrinth of hidden, yet insanely popular, indie haunts littering Brisbane’s Valley.

Millions

These five lads seemed hell bent on ushering in a new era of messy disco house with the aim of causing a ruckus and partying ’til the break of dawn. Warehouses seemed the inspired venue of choice, and the ground swell of followers seemed to grow with every loose night out.

But this all came to a head when the band broke up, leaving behind a handful of promising tracks, a few more trashed venues and a shitload of sore heads.

On August 6, a simple status update on their myspace spelled doom for the garage guys from Brissy… “sup cunts. comic sans have broken up – our last song is now on our page. our final show is at the new CLUBHOUSE on AUGUST 20. come along, go”.

From the initial bombardment that was Comic Sans to hearing the news of their demise, I only hoped this wouldn’t be the last I’d heard of these guys.

Low and behold, I caught a glimpse of a status update from a friend “check out these losers: triplejunearthed.com/millions“. I was instantly sold, and am hereby handing over all credit to Andrew Stone for the discovery!

Millions are the combination of Comic Sans and Stature Statue, and their first two tracks are gold – in particular “Citrus”.

To be honest I don’t know the guys, so they could well be losers… but damn Millions make some good music!

—

Take a listen for yourself and download their tracks on triple J unearthed.

Fresh from their single launch at The Zoo last Saturday night, Brisbane’s Montpelier have followed up their stand-out show by releasing the film clip for “Last Boat”.

The video utilises the meticulous paper stop motion technique to create a trippy hallucinogenic ride under the sea with a bearded character (and a squid).

So… If you live in Brisbane and you have even a passing interest in indie music, you are guaranteed to have stumbled across the Hungry Kids at least once in your travels.

They are Brissy boys from way back. If you have ever been to The Zoo or the Troub, you have probably bobbed your booze filled brain to their jangley uplifting tunes. If you passed through the last few Valley Fiestas you might have caught a set of theirs. Or, who knows, maybe you sat next to them on the City Cat once (ok, that’s a long shot).

“They are a bona fide part of the Brisneyland scenery: just like the freaky new porcupine bridge, the Queen Street Mall or even the big red lizard statue in West End”

What I am trying to say is, they are a bona fide part of the Brisneyland scenery: just like the freaky new porcupine bridge, the Queen Street Mall or even the big red lizard statue in West End… (Minus the millions of wasted tax dollars, eyeliner-heavy packs of disgruntled emo teens and the vomit from passing pub patrons, respectively).

Anyway, they’re ours, they’re awesome and now everyone else in Oz wants a piece.

Life for the quartet really kicked off 18 months ago when they were announced supreme victors of JJJ unearthed, granting them a coveted opening spot at Big Day Out. Since then their up-tempo hits have been streaming into our homes (and our hearts, awww) single after single.

Their new hit, Come Around, is gaining momentum on the airwaves and is teamed with an awesome new video-clip that made the front page of myspace music Australia this week (wowsers!) The boys are now gearing up to tour their much-anticipated debut album, Escapades, with local amigos (and Scenewave faves) Ball Park Music and Melbournites Big Scary.

VIDEO: Watch Come Around on Myspace

All this is kicking it off with their first show at the HiFi, this Thursday 30th September. Exciting? You bet your bum! And we at Scenewave want to sweeten the deal by offering a double pass for one lucky reader. Email… with your favourite (non-Hungry Kids) Brisbane icon to hit that jackpot!

So come be loud and proud for Brissy and support the Hungry home team before they take off to share the love around the country!

The Bigsound conference is coming to Brisbane!

Bigsound is the fastest-growing, most-respected meeting of musical-business-types in Asia Pacific. The top minds in the creative industry will be divulging the secrets of their success in an exciting bonanza of world-class panels, workshops and discussion groups… But who really cares?! Not me!

Big Sound

What has got me losing my mind-marbles, however, is the fact that Bigsound conference is teamed with a spectacular Bigsound live music showcase!

The showcase is set to be phenomenal, featuring 60 individual acts including some big names and a collection of exiting up-and-comers from all around Australia!

LINEUP: Click link for full list of performers

It isn’t in regular festival-type format either. Oh no… The event is being staged over two nights (Wed 8th & Thurs 9th, September) at a mass of different venues all over Fortitude Valley. Well, six different venues… suppose it isn’t really ‘a mass’ (can you tell I’m excited?)

$27.50 dollars gets you a one night pass (30 bands) and $44 dollars gets you two (60 bands, oh the value!) Patrons take their paper ticket and swap it for a magical wrist-band* that allows them to run around in and out of all the venues to their hearts content!!! Well, until 11:30pm, then you have to piss off home

TICKETS: Jump on Oztix

Sounds like a party? You can bet your bottom dollar, come Wednesday night the valley will be humming with lovers of good, independent Aussie music. As well as a generous helping of pretentious hipster kids.

What makes it even more special is that it is ONLY happening in Brisbane! Suck it other capital cities.

Check out the Valley Fiesta website for other exciting gigs that are happening right across next week.

http://www.valleyfiesta.com.au/

Footnotes:

Apologies for the abusive/ vicious overuse of the exclamation mark

* Bigsound wristbands are not, in fact, guaranteed to actually have any magical powers

The idea of a warehouse party for Brisbane’s local music scene created massive hype amongst music lovers over the past …

The idea of a warehouse party for Brisbane’s local music scene created massive hype amongst music lovers over the past couple of weeks. The vibe was whipped up and promoted through social media avenues, largely for the uniqueness of the venue, coupled with the BYO tag, awesome lineup and Fortitude Valley backdrop.

Disco Entertainment & Romance in my pants took a gamble on what they thought was meant to be all systems go, having received the all clear from the authorities. Contingencies were in place for the safety of all with security guards roaming the venue and a disclaimer stating, ‘STRICTLY NO GLASS. CANS AND PLASTIC ONLY. MIXERS AVAILABLE ON THE NIGHT. STRICTLY NO ALCOHOL SOLD, this is a private party’.

The subtle venue location, tucked off the northern end of the valley, was fitting as many party goers were uncertain as to exactly what a warehouse party entailed.

The night kicked off as expected with Brisbane’s ‘next big thing’, Montpelier, taking stage and wowing those who had ‘fortunately’ arrived early. Montpelier played an energetic set to the backdrop of graffiti scattered walls, a light show and a rotation of projected images on the concrete background. The platform was set for the night, with everyone just getting warmed up for the explosiveness to come from both Comic Sans and DZ.

The DJ set post Montpelier had just kicked off when the organisers were confronted with authorities wanting to shut the gig down. Organisers frantically tried to mediate, pleading to allow the gig to go ahead, but to no avail. All fans left the venue confused as to why ‘the man’ seems intent on limiting this unique (and awesome) sub-culture.

A warehouse party like Friday night adds an edge to the already vibrant live music scene in Brisbane. It’s disappointing those in positions of power can ruin a sub-culture that has the support of many.

Warehouse parties will happen.
