Single review: Young Franco, ‘Close 2 U (ft. JOY)’

Words by Scenewave Australia - Published on September 11, 2014

Last month, Brisbane whizz kid Young Franco (who recently told us some of his favourite toonz) released a two track EP, Close 2 U, just in time to start getting that summer playlist ready. At the tender age of 19, there’s high hopes for the DJ-turned-producer. He’s shared the stage with the likes of Alison Wonderland, Flight Facilities and What So Not, and has been championed by Motez, Peking Duk, Indian Summer and more.

First single Close 2 U (ft. JOY) is a blissed-out track with a swift groove, a mellow tone and an airy, heavenly melody courtesy of guest vocalist Joy. Drawing influence from house, disco and funky ’90s beats, it’s a uniquely fresh track that manages to keep you -and your dancing feet- at attention, without overdoing it. Plinky-plonky synth riffs, punchy bass tones and echoed vocal layers add to the summery soundscape, creating a tune that is so complex, yet so fluidly executed.

As a self-confessed vinyl lover and turntablism enthusiast, Young Franco has mastered the art of creating a modern tune with ’80s and ’90s-inspired tones as a basis. Close 2 U is warm and nostalgic, and has all the makings of an instant classic.

I originally wrote this for Indie Shuffle
