EP Review: Patrick James – Broken Lines

Words by Scenewave Australia - Published on August 21, 2014

Hearty riffs, rich harmonies and honest lyrics. This is what you can expect from Patrick James’ second EP, Broken Lines.

After the hype over singles Message and Wait, it’s no secret that I have kept my eye out for and hoped for amazing things from Patrick – and I was not let down. Heart & All It’s Hell opens the EP with a dense guitar riff, which slowly grows as more layers enter and progress. The track continues to build, before coming to a startling halt. Tantalising the listener’s ears, this is the perfect opening track.

The second single, Message, boasts masses of tinkering banjo (you can never have too much banjo!) and a melody that clutches onto to your brain for days on end. Fight With Me is a stunning folk ballad, featuring charming accompanying vocals courtesy of Olympia. The vocals melt together wonderfully against a backdrop of violin laced guitars – it’s yet another beautiful, perfectly executed track.

Patrick demonstrates beautiful lyricism throughout the entire EP, drenched with authentic emotion and passionate storytelling. Intricate, interwoven harmonies really tighten these tracks, leaving no empty spaces. The richness and solid creation of each track makes it hard to believe that this incredibly talented guy is just 21! Produced by Wayne Connolly (Hungry Kids of Hungary, You Am I), you can hear the surprising maturity and professionalism in these works.

Construction, production and execution of Broken Lines is all on-point and there are undoubtedly some exciting things ahead for Patrick James.
