Live Review: Patrick James, July 8 @ Brighton Up Bar

From the first time I caught Patrick James in a small support role back in 2012, I knew he was definitely one to keep an eye out for. There is something about the clarity of his rich and honest voice that leaves his audience longing for more.

It has been an exciting and rewarding past couple of years for Patrick; supporting and playing alongside a whole heap of talented Australian acts such as Boy and Bear, The Paper Kites and Josh Pyke whilst also releasing his debut EP last year, All About to Change.

Set in the cosy and intimate setting of Brighton Up Bar, Patrick gave a handful of extremely lucky fans an exclusive preview of his new EP, Broken Lines. It was such a comfortable and strangely familiar atmosphere, everyone knew everyone and it felt like a friend’s really great house party teamed up with an incredible set by incredible musicians.

Patrick, along with his 3 band members, took the stage and that’s when the magic began- It was an astounding production of perfectly woven harmonies laced with the tinkering of banjo. Patrick told the audience that he loved touring with his best friends, and you could see and hear exactly why; the chemistry of the band was undeniable which allowed for and genuine and solid performance.

The set list consisted of the 6 songs on his new EP – a short and definitely sweet gig. Favourites among the crowd were, of course, the already released singles Message and Wait. Broken Lines is a cluster absolutely stunning tracks– ranging from up-tempo folk numbers to melancholy ballads featuring violin.
